Understanding Catholic beliefs
Are Catholics Christians?
Yes. Catholics are Christians who believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior. Catholic faith professes one God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and centers on Jesus’ life, death, and Resurrection.
Do Catholics worship Mary or the saints?
Catholics worship God alone. We honor Mary as the mother of Jesus and the saints as people whose lives point toward God. Asking them to pray for us is a request for intercession, not treating them as gods. Catholic devotion to Mary is meant to lead us closer to Christ.
Why confess to a priest?
Catholics pray directly to God for forgiveness. We also believe Jesus gave the Church a ministry of reconciliation. In the sacrament of Confession, a person expresses sorrow for sin and a desire to change, and receives God’s forgiveness through the priest’s ministry. You can tell the priest if you need help with the steps.
What do Catholics believe about the Eucharist?
Catholics believe that, at Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ while retaining the appearances of bread and wine. The Eucharist is Christ’s real presence, not merely a reminder of him. It is at the heart of Catholic worship and life.
Taking the first step
Can I attend Mass if I’m not Catholic?
Yes. You are welcome to attend, listen, and pray. You do not need to know all the responses. Receiving Holy Communion has specific requirements; if you are unsure whether to receive, remain in your seat during Communion and speak with the priest before or after Mass.
How do I begin praying?
Begin with a quiet moment and speak honestly to God. You might offer thanks, ask for help, or say, “Jesus, help me to know you.” Leave room to listen. A short Gospel passage or a familiar prayer such as the Our Father can help when you cannot find your own words.
How do I become Catholic?
Contact a nearby parish and ask about exploring the faith. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, often called OCIA, provides a path of learning, prayer, and preparation. Your next steps depend on your background, including whether you have already been baptized. Start with a conversation; you do not need all the answers first.
What if I’m Catholic but have been away for years?
You can begin by attending Mass and arranging a conversation with a priest. Explain that you have been away and would like help returning. If you do not remember how to go to Confession, say so—the priest can guide you. Ask about any questions concerning your circumstances or receiving Communion.
Prefer a conversation?
A local parish can help you explore questions about faith and your own next steps.
